# What is known about harm?

## The skin-injection gap

FDA, the US Food and Drug Administration, reviewed the available ipamorelin data in its [medicine review](https://www.fda.gov/media/182088/download). As of October 1, 2026, that review identified no safety data for ipamorelin injected under the skin. That is different from a drip into a vein in a hospital.

## What happened in the surgery trial?

Potassium is the name of a substance measured in blood; here, the amount was too low. FDA's [trial summary](https://www.fda.gov/media/182088/download) reports more low potassium blood-test results in the ipamorelin group than in the dummy-drip group. Trouble sleeping and high blood sugar were also more common in the ipamorelin group. These were adults recovering from major bowel surgery.

A question to bring

What would a low potassium result mean for me, and what symptoms or tests would need attention?

Two people receiving ipamorelin died after complications of cancer surgery. FDA says it is unclear whether ipamorelin contributed to those deaths. They remain part of FDA's safety concerns.

## What else concerns FDA?

FDA's [published concern](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/certain-bulk-drug-substances-use-compounding-may-present-significant-safety-risks) includes the possibility of an immune reaction to injected ipamorelin. Clumps of peptide or impurities could trigger the body's defence system. This possibility has not been studied in people.

## When a reaction needs urgent help

Trouble breathing or swelling in the face, eyes, or tongue may signal a severe allergic reaction. [MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000844.htm), from the US National Library of Medicine, calls this an emergency. Seek urgent help through local emergency services for severe symptoms.
