# Can the visit happen online?

An online visit still needs someone to look into your health concern.

## Where you are matters

Telehealth uses video, phone calls, or exchanges online to provide care. As of September 26, 2026, [HHS guidance on permission to practise](https://telehealth.hhs.gov/licensure/getting-started-licensure) says the care professional needs permission in the state where you are. HHS is the US Department of Health and Human Services.

That is your location during the visit, not just the address saved in an account. State rules govern the permission and can differ.

## A form can start the conversation

You may write your health history before the doctor or other care professional responds. The [FSMB policy on online care](https://www.fsmb.org/siteassets/advocacy/policies/fsmb-workgroup-on-telemedicineapril-2022-final.pdf) says a fixed set of form answers alone is not enough. The care professional assessing you needs the ability to ask further questions or obtain more health history. FSMB means Federation of State Medical Boards, a group whose policy guides state boards.

State rules differ, including when a visit by written messages can be enough. The group's [prescribing guidance](https://www.fsmb.org/siteassets/advocacy/policies/guidance-on-recent-trends-in-prescribing-and-dispensing-adopted.pdf) also requires a way for patients to ask the care professional follow-up questions of their own.

## When does a visit need more than a screen?

Under the federation's policy, the care professional must arrange needed tests or make a referral for an in-person examination. Ask how that would work before the visit.
