# Can a pharmacy make ipamorelin?

A pharmacy licence does not settle the rules for this ingredient.

## First, what does compounding mean?

Compounding means a pharmacy makes medicine for an individual patient rather than supplying a drug that is already made. FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, explains the process in its [compounding questions](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/compounding-and-fda-questions-and-answers).

As of September 26, 2026, FDA had not approved compounded medicines. Before these medicines reach the market, FDA does not review their quality, effects, or safety.

## Is an ordinary pharmacy allowed to use it?

As of October 1, 2026, ipamorelin does not meet the ingredient rules for an ordinary pharmacy to make medicine from it. These are legal requirements, not laboratory test results.

FDA's [ingredient review](https://www.fda.gov/media/182088/download) found no written standard for either form in the official drug-quality books used by these rules. Neither form is an ingredient in an FDA-approved drug. Ipamorelin is also absent from the official permitted-ingredient list.

## Did taking back a request give permission?

Groups had asked FDA to allow ipamorelin acetate in ordinary pharmacy compounding, then took their requests back. FDA's [ingredient page](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/certain-bulk-drug-substances-use-compounding-may-present-significant-safety-risks), current as of April 22, 2026, records those withdrawn requests. Withdrawing that request did not authorise pharmacies to use the ingredient.

Larger makers of batches of germ-free medicines are called outsourcing facilities. FDA keeps ipamorelin acetate in their Category 2 group, which flags serious safety concerns. It is also absent from their permitted-ingredient list, so this route does not give permission either. FDA's page gives no date for the withdrawal.
